– (via squashed) Haha!  ”Titillating” would sound a distinctly odd word in this context from anyone else, but I can just hear Jimmy Carter saying it (“tidllaytin’”), and it kind of makes sense.

NY Times: Edwards Is Out →
marco: This is big news. He had a lot of followers. (More than Jakob.) But he’s not endorsing any other candidate on the way out. If the majority of his followers choose to vote in one direction, that could definitively hand the primary to Hillary or Obama.I can’t see many Edwards supporters going to Clinton, can you?

Los Angeles gets 2007 rainfall in one week →
highindustrial: Just to put this past week’s deluge in perspective: there’s been more rain in the last seven days than there was in all of 2007. Face it, Angelenos getting sympathy over rainfall? Never going to happen matey.

Can't get enough of your cottage pie
One of the traditions on the PR and Advertising courses at my “university” is for students working on assignments in groups to present themselves as a hypothetical agency.  One such group has decided to call their agency Cottage Pie, which I was disappointed to discover isn’t a euphemism for anything.

Edwards and Obama on "change"
squashed: jhn brssndn wrote:  I wonder, for example, why it is that John Edwards’ campaign has failed to connect with voters when he is far more explicit about the kind of “change” he offers than Barack Obama has been? I think the “change” mantra got a bit diluted once everybody and their cousin decided to be the candidate for change.  Edwards seems like a good guy—and...

Quick look at the markets
jhn brssndn held up surprisingly well overnight, despite fears that the unfollow button might prompt a run on the currency.  As London opened this morning, jhn was trading just two followers down on yesterday’s record high. And now the weather.  Tracey?

We can all be Influentials
lonelysandwich: ”Influentials don’t govern person-to-person communication. We all do.” -Duncan Watts, Yahoo! researcher and network-theory scientist You might read this fascinating article from Fast Company on Watts’ theory of viral success that runs counter to Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point and Ed Keller and Jon Berry’s The Influentials, and you might...

– Paul Craig Roberts I’ve seen a lot of this kind of hand-wringing lately about the blowback from globalisation on the US economy.  Yet in the context of the misery that neoliberal (or US, or IMF, or World Bank, or G8, which amounts to the same thing) economic policy has inflicted upon countless...

In the U.S. south, is Canadian a new racial slur? →
This sounds vaguely familiar, like I’ve read about it somewhere else, but apparently Southern racists (my favorite kind!) are now using “Canadian” in lieu of the N-word to say god-awful things about black people in broad daylight. [via] — highindustrial OK, I’ll bite - wasn’t Canadian always a racial slur, against Canadians?  Thangyouverymuch, I’m here all...

climate of fear
So I’m at an ATM with two of my (grown up) kids. It’s about 3pm in our small town. The 50-something woman in front of us turns round mid-transaction and asks us if we’d stand further away. Should I a) have said “don’t worry sweetheart, we’ve probably got more money than you anyway” b) have grabbed her ATM card anyway, to fulfil her belief that we...
